Bakemonogatari & Nisemonogatari review

Describe the above anime in one word: What the fuck.

You may say :that’s three words! True, but who said I was going to use only one word? You might be right, that the above statement was asking for one word but it never say anything about me having to follow it’s rules! It’s not as if my life depends on it, so I don’t need to care about the rules, right? It’s not as if when a total stranger approaches you and demands an apple from you and that you absolutely must give it to him. Right?

If your reply to my above statement is: “What the fuck?”, then welcome… To the Monogatari Series!!! Where the world is filled with “WTF?”s and head scratching moments. If you read my previous post, you should know that the Monogatari Series was the anime series that influenced me to watch anime full time, so it is only befitting that I pay tribute to it first.

Sa~ikusa!!! (So, let’s go!!!)

The 1st series in the Monogatari Series anime is Bakemonogatari. It covers the 1st two novels in Monogatari Series novels written by NisiOisin (Read Nisio Isin).

The main protagonist is the dummy guy in the centre of the above photo. Yes, the typical and traditional skimpy shrimp guy character, Araragi Koyomi. Araragi, during school break was attacked by a vampire and became one himself until he was rescued by a specialist in Kai(怪) ,otherwise known as the supernatural, Oshino Meme.

The anime takes place after the incident that occured and soon we are introduced to Senjougahara Hitagi, a girl who has absolutely no weight…

Bakemonogatari focuses on the people (Read GIRLS) that had trouble dealing with the supernatural beings that surrounds us and the efforts of Araragi to save them. Nisemonogatari then focuses on the sisters of the protagonist: Araragi Karen and Araragi Tsukihi.

BUT THAT’S NOT THE POINT!!!

If you want a very sophisticated plot that is stirring or one that will inspire you, look at another anime review.

If you think you’re in for some butt kicking male protagonist, stop here and look somewhere else.

If you think you’re in for some lovey-dovey romance, stop here.

If you think this is a normal anime, well I’m sorry to rain on your parade but…it’s not.

This particular anime uses an absurd amount of abstract images, art styles that are out of this world (Refer to image below) and animation that is comparatively different from any anime you’ve ever seen (with the exception of anime released by Studio Shaft).

Yes, Araragi. I know you hid the pornographic materials you purchased but you can’t escape the leering eyes of the vampires!!

So all this said and done, I’d suggest Bakemonogatari and Nisemonogatari series to you if you:
1)like wordplay (not cosplay)
2) understand Japanese terminology enough to understand what the hell is going on (tsundere na omae wa)
3) can completely understand abstract art (Refer below)

4) just looking for something totally different

Since the anime itself is totally out of this world, here’s my verdict.

What’s “below is fire, above is water?”

Answer: your fucking house if you don’t fucking watch this anime. Now, beat it.

    1. Haha! You’re right!! In fact, a lot of stuff in the shows they produce are ridiculous! Like, let’s say, how do you hide lots and lots of stationary on your body without a bag or pencil case? Then, with a tug on your tie, have it all falling off? Haha!

      1. Exactly my thoughts! But that’s why I enjoy watching Shaft’s productions 🙂
I’ll have to get to Nisemonogatari, I just sort of lost interest after Bakemonogatari.

      2. Well, you should get to it! Nisemonogatari can be better or worse depending on the viewer’s perception. However, it won’t be quite far off the mark, it is after all, an entry in the Monogatari series! Watch it, it’s quite good!!
