Fancy crazy girls? Fancy crude jokes about masturbation and porn? Then go to an all girls school! Well, at least, that’s what’s this anime’s premise and although I expected that the jokes would be kind of repititive, however suprisingly it wasn’t. In fact it managed to hold itself together and even managed to make me laugh. Unlike some comedy anime that were supposed to be funny, turned out to be plain erotic and edgy. However, in this Seitokai Yakuindomo’s case, it is the complete opposite. It’s supposed to plain erotic, but it turned out to be just plain funny. Plain, is it? Like how the ****** is plain white…No…It’s actually milky white…
(Retort: What the hell are you talking about??!!! This is an anime review!!!!)
Anyway, never eat while watching this anime ’cause you don’t know when the anime will throw a totally crude but hysterical joke that’ll leave you rolling on the floor. I don’t know about you but I had actually choke once watching this anime. Honestly, this anime really is unpredictable. At first, it can be all sweet and innocent, the very next second, you’d choke on your very own saliva, after an unexpected joke about porn or masturbation. And no, the guy is very innocent in this anime, THE GIRLS ARE THE PROBLEM!! And no, there is no stereotypical harem scene where the female characters push their boobs into the male protagonist’s face so don’t worry. Although there was a scene where a female character drops her face onto the male protagonist’s crotch but that was on purpose. Really.
Osai Academy is formerly a all-girls school but due to the declining birth rates in Japan, is converted into a co-ed school. The main character, Takatoshi Tsuda enters into Osai Academy where the boys-to-girls ratio was extreme (28:524), citing reasons like “it’s near to my house”. (Really, Tsuda? Well, I don’t fucking believe you!) Anyway, on the first day of school, he was forcibly recruited into the student council by the (female) president, citing reasons like “I need a male’s perspective of stuff since Osai Academy turned into a co-ed school” and he became the vice president of the student council. Normally, harem haters alike will have their sirens ringing already, however, don’t worry…
THIS AIN’T A NORMAL HAREM ANIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No harem, no edgy poses (sort of) and definitely no romantic relationships going on. Don’t worry. This anime’s female characters are not loose women! They don’t even loosen their bow ties when it gets unbearably hot though they do loosen the clothing that you can’t see on the outside, like underwear…
Anyway, the reason to why I put Seitokai Yakuindomo after Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun and Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou is simply because it has striking similarities with both GSNK and DKnN. Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun has an abundance of interesting characters like the log, erm, I mean, Nozaki and Mami–koshiba. While Seitokai Yakuindomo does not lose out in terms of weird but fun characters. For example, there’s the perfectly perfect student council president who is great in all aspects like academics, sports even housework, and also (Wait for it) a history buff (refer to picture below).
Wait! There’s more. Like her mindset is still in puberty. And a pervert. Coming from me, it must be pretty hard. (refer to picture below)
The side characters are also quite interesting. It seems like all the girls in the school are aloof. Take the student council administrative teacher, Naruko Yokoshima for example. You would actually think that a teacher would actually be more self-behaved but…well, how do you put it? Well, I’d say she’s a form of tribute to GTO, maybe like a female version of Onizuka…But…well…Well, being a female version of Onizuka says quite a lot.
There’s also the stalker character…I mean, photographer character, Ranko Hata who wouldn’t hesitate to take a risk to be the first on the trail of hot news, albeit the “hot” news being a little…well…I’d say it’ll appeal more for boys rather than girls. But after watching the anime, I’m starting to feel that girls can be pretty perverse at times…
Despite having an abundance of interesting (and crazy) characters, it didn’t quite succeed (I wouldn’t call it fail…) in polishing the chemistry in between the characters. In fact, the chemistry is mostly between Tsuda and the girls. The girls rarely interact with each other and even if they do, it isn’t as interesting.
On the other hand, Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou and Seitokai Yakuindomo is similar in terms of format and premise. They both have don’t have a particular plot to follow so they are kind of free to jump all over the place as freely as they like. The setting of the time are unconditional and they do mini jokes and mini arcs just about as freely. However, despite the striking similarities, Seitokai Yakuindomo just wasn’t as good as Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou. The jokes were a little too fast and the viewers were not given quite as much time to digest the jokes, unlike DKnN.
Speaking of Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou, I’d say Seitokai Yakuindomo is sort of an antithesis of Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou since DKnN was set in an all-boys school while SYD was set in a former all-girls school. So, you’d think the two are alike but you’re wrong! If you’d ask me, I’d say the two are completely different, like how boys and girls are different. They give off a totally weird vibe all together.
Anyhow, Seitokai Yakuindomo is quite an interesting anime. Honestly, it’s a good anime, but great? Well, I wouldn’t go so far to call it that…but if you insist…
I’ll strip off my underwear!!!
Hmhm, don’t worry. I won’t take my clothes off…
I’ll just take off my underwear under the skirt!
(Retort: ENOUGH WITH THE UNDERWEAR JOKES!!!!)
